Staying at the Tensas Tower: A Hidden Architectural Gem in Louisiana

Tensas Tower Living Space

Nestled in the heart of South Louisiana and rising 50 feet above the bayou landscape, the Tensas Tower is more than just a place to stay—it’s an immersive experience in architectural storytelling, regional heritage, and thoughtful design. From the moment I stepped inside, I knew this wasn’t your typical Airbnb.

Designed by Paul J. Allain, Architect APAC, the Tensas Tower is a striking example of how historical reverence can meet modern-day sustainability and innovation. Located on the site of the former 1931 Ford Dealership and Garage, the tower is part of an adaptive reuse initiative to transform a once-blighted radiator shop into a vibrant modern live/work space. It’s a place that tells a story, from its Civil War inspiration to its compact yet luxurious design.

One of the most compelling things about the Tensas Tower is its name—and the legacy behind it. The structure pays homage to the USS Tensas, a Civil War-era shipwreck discovered nearby during the development of the adjacent Bayou Teche waterfront. The influence is unmistakable: the largest balcony, with its ship’s bow-like shape, creates a dramatic lookout point where guests can savor sweeping views of both sunrise and sunset.

This industrial nautical architecture theme continues throughout the tower, bringing with it a sense of place deeply tied to South Louisiana’s maritime and industrial heritage. It’s not just a vacation rental—it’s a living museum of creativity and resilience.

Spanning a modest 1,290 square feet, the Tensas Tower is a contemporary model of compact yet sustainable residential architecture. The layout maximizes vertical space by stacking rooms across three levels, offering a clever solution to limited urban space. The multi-level design not only offers sweeping 360-degree views from its various balconies but also seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings, encouraging biodiversity and green space preservation.

Features like rainwater collection, daylight harvesting, and natural ventilation reflect a commitment to sustainability, while materials such as recycled metal panels nod to the region’s industrial past. A rooftop boom crane and interior hoist system were even integrated to help with moving larger items—proof that no detail was overlooked.

Once inside, I was immediately struck by how well the interior echoed the tower’s industrial maritime narrative. Steel beams, exposed structural elements, and porthole-style windows framed in metal panel walls give the space a bold, ship-like feel. But the home also offers warmth, balance, and livability.

The interior design makes masterful use of space-saving techniques—from an aluminum alternating-tread stair that leads to the roof terrace to a locally sourced spiral staircase that connects the three floors. Vertical design is celebrated with a stairwell accent wall made from reclaimed cypress wood, while horizontal elements like stacked kitchen cabinetry and floating entertainment centers create the illusion of expansive space.

Thoughtful details abound: vibrant artwork, subtle white and grey tones, and bamboo flooring offer an airy feel. The surround sound system fills the space with music from a curated collection of vinyl records, setting the perfect ambiance.

Paul, the host, was incredibly responsive and helpful, answering all my questions before and during the stay. You can feel how much care has gone into making the Tensas Tower more than a place to sleep—it’s a place to experience.

The bed was super comfortable, and the shower is a hidden gem, fitted with up to five powerful jets that turn a simple rinse into a full-on spa experience. There’s plenty of outdoor seating on the balcony, ideal for relaxing with a morning coffee or an evening drink while watching the bayou shift with the light.

Now, a note of realism: the staircase is small and a bit steep, which is part and parcel of such a vertical, compact structure. I’d recommend packing light or using a soft bag rather than traditional luggage—it’ll make the vertical journey much easier. But honestly, that’s a small trade-off for what you get in return.

If you’re looking for a unique Airbnb in Louisiana that’s deeply rooted in history, packed with smart design, and curated for a memorable stay, Tensas Tower is it. Whether you're an architecture enthusiast, a design lover, or simply someone looking for a one-of-a-kind travel experience, this tower offers something truly special.

It’s a place that honors its past while embracing the future—a masterclass in adaptive reuse, a showcase of Paul J. Allain’s visionary design, and a hidden treasure for travelers craving something authentic and unforgettable.
